Coronavirus: The big hurdles before India

Total number of confirmed cases in India is 1834 as of 2nd April morning, the cases are on the rise and India may face a few challenges in coming future.

The major challenge India is going to face is in its health sector. The country dose not have a well equipped Health Care system to deal with a Pandemic like this. There are just over 70,000 Intecive Care Unit beds (ICU beds) , that is less than 2.3 beds for 1,00,000 people . India dose not have enough ventilators, there are no official figures according to estimates the number of ventilators in India ranges between 25,000- 40,000. For a population of 1.3 Billion that is clearly not enough. The total number of Government beds available in India is little over 7,00,000 which means there 0.55 beds for 1000 people.

Not only Heath sector but we are facing challenges in Hygiene sector. We are being told that washing hands with soap and sanitizing our hands regularly are the only way to prevent the Corona Virus but in India only 36% of households wash their hands with soap before consuming food , 26% do not was their hands with soap even after Deification.

These grim numbers are from India's National Sample Survey Office.

That said every cloud had a silver lining and India too had it share of success to fight this Pandemic. The biggest success came in from people , who came together to support the lockdown stay home and safe during this Pandemic. From Doctors , to Government sector employees to sanitation workers who are helping us get over these difficult times.

We at Sarv Vigyan Foundation are doing our part in helping India deal with this pandemic, one such occasion was at Dhawana Gaon in Haryana, where people who were daily wagers were stuck, due to lockdown all work and transportation stopped. When we heard about this we felt the need to do something about it.

One of our volunteer contacted us from Dhawana Gaon and said he can help us arrange permission from Sarpanch Sri Bir Singh ji to facilitate distribution of basic Food and Hygiene kits. On request of our Chairman Om Prakash and Director Ravi Prakash , the village Sarpanch has assured us that he will provide for their proper accommodation in his village till the lockdown.

It was with all your help and contributions that we were able to achieve this task. We are planning to reach out to 5000 such people in need and have reached to 450.
